ALERT: False PM Notifications

This morning I received a PM from an account on this website claiming to be from "Forum Administration" that appeared to be alerting me to a "virus". I assume it went out to everyone, but it is NOT from the administrators of this forum. It is malicious spam.

This is simply the latest trick that spammers and virus spreaders are using on semi-public websites to spread their junk. When you get stuff like this, please delete it without opening the link. If the Forum administrators need to contact you, they will do so directly from a known account, not one you've never heard of. (If there is any doubt, view the user's profile and note the date that they joined.)

Just deleted the one I got Lt. Traveller and figured it was a false note. Appreciate the work your doing to keep these clowns at bay.

I thought it was kinda funny that I get the message I'm infected with a virus from a site who is infected with a spammer Rolling Eyes

The sad part is there are people falling prey to these numbskulls. On a lighter side it isn't from Nigeria. lol

Yep, I got it as well. Notified Tote.

I suspect these messages are coming from real people rather than bots, so most systems to prevent automated accounts won't keep them out. Without making the whole site an invite-only place where you can't even make an account without special permission or some sort of approval process, I really don't know what can be done.

OK, the admin tells me he has put up a pretty broad ban that should prevent more of these folks from getting to the site. Please let us know, though, if you hear of any legitimate members who are having trouble connecting to the site as a result.
